The Museum was built in 1996 with the purpose of protecting and exhibiting the mosaic sculpture that decorated the monuments of the Ancient City of Copán, built between 400 and 800 AD. This Mayan city is the most artistic that has been found so far. In 1985, Dr. William Fash, Barbara Fash, and the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History, started the Copán Mosaic Sculpture Study and Conservation Project, with the aim of classifying, studying, and preserving some 30,000 sculptural pieces that They formed part of the decoration of the constructions of ancient Copan. What gave rise to the construction of this museum that houses approximately 3 thousand sculptural pieces. You will have the opportunity to appreciate facades and decorative sculptures of temples, palaces, the Hieroglyphic Stairway, the Ball Court, some stelae and Altars. All of these are original, leaving a reliable replica in advance in the place where each one of them was found. In addition, there is a copy of the famous Rosalila Temple in the center of this museum.
